The hard part was
never the code.
The business side and the technical side don't speak the same language. One knows exactly what it needs but not how to build it; the other can build anything but doesn't live the business. Most projects break right there: you ask for one thing and get another, or burn weeks just trying to be understood. I've spent my career in that gap, turning “here's my problem” into “here's what to build.”

For six years, as a data governance consultant, I was the technical side Fortune 500 companies hired to build it: the data systems and workflows their operations ran on, across pharma, consumer goods, and energy. What set me apart on that side was that I could talk to the business: I'd sit with the people who knew what they needed but couldn't spec it, and turn that into what actually got built. Enterprise data is a world away from a small-business website. But the hard part, turning a business problem into a technical answer, never changes. That's what I brought with me.
Why I walked away
from all that.
Two reasons. The work had drifted: the further I got, the more it became talking about building instead of building, and I missed the craft. And the impact had gone abstract: at that scale, even good work is a line on someone's spreadsheet. So I left. Web development was the work I'd always wanted; I just finally chose it.

This was the plan all along. The web is where I started; data governance is just where my career went for a while. Coming back to it means doing the work I actually trained for, now with years of solving expensive technical problems behind it.
